 The History of Crochet

Crochet is defined as creating pieces of fabric from a single yarn using a crochet hook (pictured left).  The word's origin comes from the French word croc or croche (which means "hook").

Experts believe that crocheting may have existed prior to the1800 in Arabia, South America, or China, but due to a lack of evidence this is difficult to prove.  The first recorded account of crocheting is from Europe in 1812, when it was refered to as "shephard's knitting."

Used first primarily as a means to create fabric, crocheting quickly developed into intricate designs which acted as an affordable version of traditional and expensive lace.  In the early 1900s, the act of crocheting had developed into an art, fueled by fashion demands of the Edwardian Era.
